Clinical Analysis on Cancer of the Larynx

Abstract
Laryngeal cancer represents the highest incidence in head and neck cancer, and numerous reports regarding its clinical and statistical characteristics have been reported. However, more precise and ample data should be collected and analyzed in
this
country.
The authors analyzed 428 cases of laryngeal cancer treated at Yonsei Medical Center during the last 18 year period from 1975 to 1992. Five-year survival rates (5-yr SR) were calculated according to the primary site, clinical stages, and treatment
modality. The incidence was predominated in males by 9:1 and showed its peak at 6th and 7th decades. Glottis was the most common primary site (57.8%). Advanced cancers (61.2%) were more common than early cancers. 5-vr SR was significantly higher
in
combined treatment modality group in advanced cancers. 5-yr SR was 63.2% in glottic cancer, 49% in supraglottic cancer. The overall 5-yr SR of laryngeal cancer was 58.2%. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:12, 1995)
